A Commitment to Sustainable Hospitality

At Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, our approach to sustainability is rooted in a longstanding commitment to preserving the natural beauty, wildlife, dark skies, and landscapes that make Jasper so special.

Our sustainable engagements

Jasper National Park is home to the world's largest accessible dark sky preserve. Protecting our night sky from light pollution is extremely important to us which is why we have taken the following actions to reduce our energy consumption: these efforts include upgrading property-wide lighting to energy-efficient technology and transitioning street lighting to dark sky cerified fixtures, with several key areas already completed. Dining outlets host candle-lit dining experiences every Earth Hour and Earth Day. Through our ongoing Power Down Campaign, we invite guests to join us to remain energy-conscious at home and in the workplace. Learn more about Jasper’s Dark Sky Preserve.

Guest room soap & hygiene products that would otherwise be discarded are donated to Clean the World. A global organization that recycles and distributes these products to vulnerable communities in over 120 countries. The Lodge is proud to be a member of Clean the World’s global hygiene revolution.

Through our partnership with Orbisk, we use AI-driven technology to measure and reduce food waste in our kitchens. Using image recognition technology, Orbisk analyzes discarded food items and provides insights that help prevent waste before it occurs.

We have partnered with Foodsteps, a carbon footprint measurement tool, to better understand and monitor the environmental impact of our menus. Available on all client group menus, this platform provides guests with data-led insights into the environmental impact of their culinary selections.

Our culinary philosophy prioritizes local and seasonal ingredients, reducing transport emissions and supporting nearby suppliers. We are committed to ethical sourcing – we do not source any threatened or endangered species, and all of our eggs come from free-range chickens.

In addition to sourcing an increasing amount of local Albertan food and only serving OceanWise Certified fish to prevent overfishing of at-risk species. To further reduce our environmental footprint, we continue to expand our on-site greenhouse, increasing our use of locally grown ingredients throughout the resort.

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge has proudly maintained a Five-Green Key Eco-Rating Certification from Green Key Global since 2018. This innovative, complimentary platform helps both our hotels and our valued clients measure CO2 emissions associated with a stay, meeting, or event.

Every Accor hotel is integrated into the system, with calculations based on your hotel’s specific CSR information, complemented by advanced AI where relevant.

Beyond just measurement, the Accor Carbon Tracker also provides practical guidelines to help reduce carbon emissions, fostering a more sustainable future for all.

We are thankful to have some of the purest drinking water in the entire world right here in Jasper National Park. Sourced from the glacier-fed watershed above Maligne Lake, the water is naturally filtered through an underground Karsdt system before reaching Lac Beauvert. From there, our on-site water treatment facility filters the water to the highest standards before distributing it throughout the resort for guests and staff to enjoy.

Sustainability efforts at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge are guided by a dedicated committee and sustainability champion who help drive initatives across the property. The sustainability committees identify areas of improvement, discuss strategies to solve issues, and engages the hotel in sustainability through innovative events and programming.

As part of Accor's annual clean-up program, colleagues across the resort come together to help care for the property and surrounding community. These efforts relfect our shared commitment to protecting the natural beauty of Jasper and preserving the landscapes that make this destination so remarkable.

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge utilizes an advnaced Building Management System (BMS) to monitor and optimize energy use across the property.

Anticipation builds as the resort gears up to unveil its latest endeavor: a state-of-the-art cogeneration plant set to revolutionize its energy landscape. Scheduled for debut later this year, this facility will not only produce energy for the entire property but also repurpose excess heat to fuel the hotel’s hot water supply and provide steam for comprehensive heating, ushering in a new era of energy efficiency. This initiative is just one of several large infrastructure upgrades the resort is undergoing as part of its ambitious decarbonization strategy.

We continuously invest in upgrades that enhance the guest experience while helping reduce our environmental impact. Across the resort, 95-100% of lighting has been converted to energy-efficient fixtures, with sensor-activated lighting installed in many areas to help reduce unnecessary energy consumption. We have also introduced low-flow sinks, toilets, and showerheads in guest accommodations to support water conservation and help preserve this valuable natural resource.

With certified Sustainable Event Professional Certificate (SEPC) holders on our team, we bring specialized sustainability expertise to meetings, conferences, and events hosted at the resort. The SEPC program provides comprehensive training across 16 modules, covering carbon management, sustainability frameworks, socially responsible design, and strategies to improve the environmental performance of meetings and events . Our team can help clients incorperate meaningful initiatives such as waste reduction, responsible sourcing, and community-focused programs, while demonstrating the broader operational and business benefits of sustainable event planning.

Fairmont Jasper park lodge is committed to a comprehensive waste management strategy that prioritizes the reduction and reuse of resources in alignment with Accor’s Circular Economy Policy. As part of this commitment, single-use plastic water bottles have been removed from all guest rooms, helping to reduce waste before it is created.

For materials that cannot be avoided, the resort resort maintains a range of diversion and recycling programs through specialized partnerships that support the recovery of items such as Nespresso capsules, cooking oil, shipping pallets, eco-burner tanks, and propane cylinders. In addition, our dining venues utilize reusable or compostable takeaway packaging to further minimize environmental impact.

Through GAIA, our sustainability data tool, we track monthly performance across energy, water, food waste, and sustainable actions across all operations. These insights help us measure progress against key performance inidcators, guide continuous improvement efforts, and support long-term envirmonmental objectives, including the reduction of scope 1, 2, and 3 GHC emissions.
