our Story

Nestled in the heart of East Africa, Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club traces its origins to a story of passion and adventure. Originally named 'Mawingo,' the club was born of an unforgettable love between an elegant woman and a daring aviator, with Africa as their playground—a place where dreams came alive against breathtaking landscapes.

1930s – The Birth of ‘Mawingo’

The story begins as a tale of romance and adventure. In the 1930s, Rhoda Lweinsohn, a glamorous American socialite, fell in love with Gabriel Prudhomme, a dashing French aviator, during a Kenyan safari.

1948–1959 – From Private Estate to Legendary Club

In the 1950s, only the wealthy hunted in Africa. Ray Ryan, charmed by Mawingo, bought it with William Holden and Carl Hirschman in 1959. They transformed it into the exclusive Mount Kenya Safari Club.

1960s–1990s – A Playground for the Elite

The Club drew royalty, dignitaries, and celebrities: Sir Winston Churchill, Bing Crosby, Conrad Hilton, President Lyndon B. Johnson, and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, among others. Kenya’s political elite, including Presidents Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki.

2000s–Present – A Legacy Refined Under Fairmont

Now under the management of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, the Mount Kenya Safari Club continues to be a benchmark of refined luxury, conservation, and cultural connection.
