Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa

OUR STORY

A historic icon in Sonoma wine country

Rooted in history and rich with story, Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa stands on land cherished for centuries. Native American communities gathered here around the natural hot springs, drawn to their healing and spiritual qualities. In the 1840s, Dr. T.M. Leavenworth—a New York physician and Episcopalian minister—made his home here, naming the property “Agua Rica,” meaning "Rich Waters." Since then, these legendary waters have long attracted travelers seeking a restorative escape, where the natural beauty of Sonoma’s famed wine country meets the healing power of geothermal springs, offering an unparalleled experience of tranquility and rejuvenation.

1902

Captain H.E. Boyes  purchased the property in the early 1880s and opens The Boyes Hot Springs Hotel in 1902, inviting travelers from the San Francisco bay area to "take the waters" at California's premier hot mineral resort. The modern hotel featured electric lights, running water, moving pictures, and a glass-enclosed swimming pool, creating "the largest mineral tank in the world."

The hotel was lost to a fire in 1923 but would emerge from the ashes in 1927, reopening as Sonoma Mission Inn. The Spanish Colonial Revival architecture featured red-tile roofs and a Salmon-hue stucco façade that is still present today.

1980

The hotel's iconic spa opens, allowing guests to harness the power of the natural hot springs with access to geothermally-heated mineral pools and inspired spa treatments.

2002

The resort became a member of the world-renowned Fairmont Hotels & Resorts family, joining legendary hotels such as Fairmont San Francisco, Fairmont Banff Springs and The Savoy in London. In 2014, Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa becomes a member of the Historic Hotels of America.
