Opening Day June 1, 1914

We can hardly realize we are in a Calgary hotel, wrote a group of visitors in a congratulatory telegram to the CPR. "The magnificence and splendour of the Palliser is beyond the wildest dreams of the ever optimists who came here thirty years ago."

Liquor License No.1

Prohibition took effect in Alberta on July 1, 1916. The bar within the hotel closed from 1916 to 1924. When it ended, CPR acted quickly and obtained License No.1, beating out every other hotel in the province for the distinction.

1960 Stampede

In 1960, trick rider and roper Montie Montana, who performed daily at the Stampede Corral, surprised both staff and guests at the Palliser by riding his pinto horse, Rex, through the lobby and up the main staircase.

Architectural Thoughtfulness

Unlike its Chateau-style contemporaries in the CPR chain, Palliser was built to resemble the grain elevators spanned across the prairies. It is E-shaped, designed ro provide generous lighting as there are no "inside" rooms.

Changing the Landscape

Presenting a new skyline and introducing a new era of luxury, Fairmont Palliser permanently changed the landscape of Calgary. "When the Palliser was built it was regarded by some as a white elephant," the Albertan mused, "but the elephant has evidently producd ivory tusks."
