our Story

The story of Fairmont Orchid stretches back hundreds of years to when native Hawaiians fished, farmed and lived in perfect harmony with nature in a region known as Kalahuipuaʻa. From the ancient pathways once traversed by King Kamehameha I to the serene landscapes where native Hawaiians thrived in harmony with nature, every corner of our property echoes with the spirit of aloha.

King Kamehameha I, Early 19th Century

The Kohala Coast is the birthplace of King Kamehameha I, the Hawaiian king who unified the Hawaiian Islands in the early 19th century. At the resort, remnants of Kamehameha's time remain—royal fishponds, ancient footpaths and petroglyphs whispering tales of the past.

Francis I'i Brown

In 1936, Francis Iʻi Brown transformed Kalahtiipua'a into a secluded fishing retreat. Known as “the last ali'i,” he was a descendant of Papa Iʻi, a general in Kamehameha’s army. A celebrated athlete and statesman, Brown hosted legendary “ho’okipa” parties for 40 years.

1972

In 1972, Francis H. I'i Brown sold the property to Mauna Lani Resort, and Kalahuipua'a was rechristened as Mauna.Lani - "mountains reaching the heavens" - named in reverence to the five volcanic mountains that surround the Kohala region.

1990

In 1990, this 540-room luxury resort opened, a stunning beachfront oasis spanning 32 acres. With upscale dining, a full-service spa, a 10,000-square-foot oceanfront pool, and championship tennis courts, it redefined Hawaiian indulgence in paradise.

2003

In 2003, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts purchased the luxury property, which joins other notable hotels in the Fairmont collection.
