1882

In 1882, Thomas Wilson, employed by the Canadian Pacific Railway, heard avalanches while camping with the Stoney First Nations. Guided to a lake they called the "lake of little fishes," Wilson became the first European to see its stunning blue and green waters, naming it Emerald Lake.

1890

In 1890, Cornelius Van Horne, general manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway, envisioned a hotel for outdoor adventurers. The original Chalet Lake Louise had a dining room, bar, and two bedrooms. By 1912, it expanded, hosting over 50,000 visitors annually.

1900

Lake Louise is the birthplace of Canadian mountaineering. After Phillip Abbot's 1896 death on Mount Lefroy, Canadian Pacific hired Swiss mountain guides for safety. From 1899 to 1954, these guides led over 250 first ascents and influenced the Chateau’s architecture, cuisine, and adventures.

1970

Swiss and Austrian guides introduced skiing to Banff and Lake Louise youth in 1909. By the 1930s, ski areas like Mount Norquay and Lake Louise were thriving. The Chateau opened to winter guests in the 1970s, and today it’s a key stop on the international ski circuit, hosting the Lake Louise World Cup.
