1958

As Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport took shape, Pan Am envisioned a luxurious hotel nearby to warmly welcome travelers and airline crews. This dream materialized with the grand opening of what is now known as the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel.

1953 - 1959

During the Cuban Revolution, affluent visitors seeking luxury and entertainment turned to Puerto Rico for its rich culture, warm climate, casino gaming, and vibrant nightlife. The hotel became the place to be and be seen.

1960s

After the Cuban Revolution, the hotel becomes the epicenter of entertainment gaining reputation for its artist-in-residence program with stars such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, The Supremes, Paul Anka, and Liza Minelli.

1961

Louis Puro, a New York investor, becomes the chairperson of the San Juan Hotel Corporation. Puro decides to renovate and expand the hotel, hiring Morris Lapidus, the renowned designer of the Fontainebleau and the Eden Roc resorts in Miami Beach.

1968

The renovation was completed under Alan Lanigan, who traveled the world to source decorative objects. He chose Terracotta and Carrara marble from Italy and cherry mahogany from Santo Domingo for the arches, hand-carved by Jose Laguna and 15 artisans.

An iconic fixture

Unique in the world, this is the signature icon of the hotel. Hand-blown in Czechoslovakia, this piece of art weighs 4,000 pounds, has 185 lightbulbs and 7,000 pieces of crystal; it is the third largest Czech crystal chandelier in the world.
