1907

Following the devastating 1906 earthquake on opening day, the Fair sisters hired young architect Julia Morgan to bring the hotel back to life. Exactly one year later on April 18, 1907, Fairmont San Francisco opened to great fanfare and celebration.

1933

Cirque Bar opened in 1933 to be the first bar following the repeal of Prohibition. The walls are adorned with brilliant gold murals painted by Esther Bruton, depicting in Art Deco style dancing horses, acrobats, and other circus scenes.

In December 1961, a well-dressed crowd at the fabulous Venetian supper club at Fairmont San Francisco became the first to hear Tony Bennett serenade them with "I Left My Heart In San Francisco." That famed tune would later become his signature tune.

1981

Built in 1927 for local financier John S. Drumm, after 54 years as a private residence, the Penthouse Suite became available for the first time as a hotel suite attracting kings, rock stars and presidents alike in this dazzling crown jewel.
