Known as the 'Castle in the City, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver has been the pinnacle of elegance since its debut in 1939, when a visit by the British royal couple sealed its reputation as one of the most iconic luxury hotels in Vancouver. In 2024, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver was awarded in Condé Nast Traveler Magazine's annual coveted Gold List, the only Canadian hotel to receive this prestigous honour.

1939

The hotel was officially opened by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on May 29, during their Royal Tour of Canada.

1940

Dal Richards was an institution at the hotel's Panorama Roof Ballroom on the 15th floor. The Dal Richards Orchestra played 5 nights a week for 25 years, with a live CBC radio broadcast every Saturday evening.

1944

Jennie Pearl Cox, a socialite who regularly attended luxurious events at the hotel, was killed in a tragic car accident. Since then, there have been numerous sightings of a lady in a red dress that seemingly disappears in front of them.

1965

The hotel underwent an extensive modernization. Original fixtures of mahogany, brass, crystal and floral patterns were replaced with the plastic lights, bright colours and geometric patterns that were fashionable at the time.

Housekeeper Ethel Ferguson was horrified at the idea of selling off the mahogany furnishings so she carefully hid over 200 pieces. More than 15 years later when a restoration took place, Ethel, produced enough original furniture to decorate 35 rooms
