our Story

Since 1912, the iconic Fairmont Château Laurier has stood in the heart of beautiful downtown Ottawa. Located at the corner of Rideau Street across from Parliament Hill, it was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada in 1980. For over 100 years, it has welcomed famous faces and visitors from all over the world to experience an elevated luxury stay in Canada’s capital city.

Fairmont Château Laurier's Link to the <b><i>Titanic</i></b>

In 1907, Charles Melville Hays commissioned Ottawa’s premier hotel. Tragically, he died on the Titanic days before its opening on April 15, 1912, along with his party returning from England.

Portraits of the Powerful

Yousuf Karsh, a renowned portrait photographer, lived at the Fairmont Château Laurier for 18 years, donating seven portraits in 1998, now displayed in the Reading Lounge and Karsh Suite.

The Fairmont Château Laurier, between the Rideau Canal Locks and ByWard Market, boasts a French Renaissance design with neo-Gothic elements, built with granite, marble, limestone, and a copper roof.
