Resort Architecture & Design

Inspired by the legacy of Addison Mizner (1872-1933), an iconic figure in the world of architecture and a true master in the art of Mediterranean design, the revolutionary design vision of Warren Sheets is showcased throughout the exquisite Fairmont Grand Del Mar resort in a seamless confluence of romance, history and authenticity.

Guests are treated to a visual masterpiece as they explore the Resort and discover graceful arched doorways, gold leaf and wrought iron detail, rustic wood beams, hand-stenciled ceilings and hand-carved marble. At Fairmont Grand Del Mar, public areas are more than just architectural spaces, they are statements about beauty and inspiration, passion and elegance. Prepare to be enchanted.

The Rosette

The rosette form, a historic European motif borne out of French architecture, is firmly entrenched into the design of the Resort. Interior doors were designed with three different wood finishes; aged walnut, antique rosewood and butternut. Each of the ten antique rosewood door panels are adorned with the rosette detail.

Hand Cut Stone

Each and every stone element at the resort - the carved arches, stone fireplaces and inlays, carved medallions and more - were fabricated in Italy by a four generation Veronese family of exceptional carvers, stone cutters and sculptors. Each stone column at the Resort (more than 70) is one complete vertical piece.

Hand Painted Tile

The design team worked to create features which represented European authenticity, grace, and most importantly permanence. An example of this detail is the extensive use of hand-painted tile featuring authentic European design motifs with custom color pallets.

Grand Staircase

An important design objective was to showcase the decorative arts of Europe and ensure the guest experience was a sensory feeling of being in a fine European hotel or gallery. Taking time, and caring to find the right design element, the perfect fit - as showcased by the hand painted gold leaf staircase scroll work.
