THE FAIRMONT DALLAS APPOINTS COURTNEY MILES ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Dallas Sunday, April 01, 2012
The Fairmont Dallas is pleased to announce the appointment of Courtney Miles as Artist in Residence. The Artist in Residence program is a collaborative initiative featuring local and regional artists who reside in the hotel for three months at a time while working in an on-site studio space. Ms. Miles will serve as Artist in Residence from April 2012 through June 2012. At the conclusion of her residency, she will contribute a piece to the hotel’s permanent collection.
Exploring themes of pop culture through iconic self portraits, Ms. Miles works with a variety of mediums including photography, painting, video and installation. A Dallas native, she attended Texas Christian University, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2001. She later attended University of Dallas, where she earned a Master of Arts degree in 2009 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2010. Over the past several years, she has shaped her artistic career by participating in group and solo exhibitions at prominent local galleries, including the Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery at the University of Dallas and Kettle Art Gallery. Her most recent work, a series of self-portraits titled “Courtney is Here,” examines contemporary definitions of fame, vanity, materialism and self-absorption.
Ms. Miles finds artistic inspiration for her self-portraits in celebrity-centric tabloid magazines, entertainment news and social media, all of which she absorbs on a daily basis. Another source of inspiration for her self-referential imagery is Andy Warhol’s iconic quote: “In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes.” Ms. Miles considers herself a reality artist, describing her work as a mixture of painting and performance art “with a dash of neon.”
Throughout her tenure as Artist-in-Residence, Ms. Miles will be working in the glass-front design studio located on the “O” level of the hotel. Members of the public are encouraged to visit the studio to interact with the artist and watch her at work. Artist in Residence studio hours are Monday through Friday, from 9:00am – 5:00pm.
Courtney Miles – Artist’s Statement: “Through painting, video, photography, text and installation, I strive to blend “self” with the notion of celebrity to draw attention to the tension between reality and artifice. Playing with a persona based on celebrity, I call attention to the stereotypes that this “scene” reinforces, question its attraction and highlight its self-absorption. Through branding, I emphasize the conflict of self-promotion and privacy in a generation of social networking phenomena.”
