Brief History of The Empire Ballroom:
Originally, The Empire Ballroom existed as the hotel's main dining room with a smaller breakfast room opening just off this space onto the terrace. There was a private corridor and single elevator, which could be used by guests of the hotel who wished to reach the cafe or the dining room without going through the main rotunda. The guests were usually women who were not permitted to enter the rotunda or public spaces unescorted.

The breathtaking ceiling of The Empire Ballroom was hidden for many years when the room was divided in 1966 into the Hearth & Hound, Inglenook,  and Quiet Bar. All fairly dark rooms, they languished under a false ceiling and garish paint until the hotel closed in 1983. The low ceiling installed at the time protected the magnificent 'Chase' scene painted on the 24' high ceiling. Note the grillwork on the west wall of the ballroom. It once fronted a musicians' gallery, where the band would be heard, but not seen.

Since restoration, the effect is now light and open. The hallway to The Empire Ballroom is an extension that was added, as there was no inside access to the ballroom after renovations. The Foyer is also a new addition, which provides extra space for guests attending functions in the Ballroom and the walls fronting the Ballroom are the original exterior stones dating back to 1915.
