Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

We stayed for just under a week for a conference and had a great time. Great service and excellent activities to do at the resort for free
At a stunning location, it was so great to be able to take my family away for a couple of days.

Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Care taken with presentation of big and small details. Beautiful buildings, rooms and facilities. I had the most amazing stay.
Staying at the Fairmont Banff Springs is the best treat for anyone! This place is in the best possible location, has the best accommodation, facilities and the food is amazing! My family spent 4 amazing days there, enjoyed the spa, the facilities and the great restaurants! Thank you all the staff at Fairmont!
A wonderful stay where everyone, from the cleaners, to front of house, to Spa, restaurant made you feel like you were the only person staying in the hotel.
From start to finish, the staff were extremely helpful and ensured that everything was taken care of for me.
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my deep disappointment with the recent experience I had during my stay at the Fairmont Banff Springs, particularly in relation to planning my wedding at your esteemed establishment. My partner and I had been eagerly anticipating our wedding at the Fairmont Banff Springs, with a planned budget of $350,000 to $500,000. However, our initial meeting with the wedding planner left much to be desired. Despite the significance of the occasion, the planner rushed us through a brief 10-15 minute consultation without delving into crucial details such as guest count, budget, menu preferences or the number of events we plan to host. This lack of attention to detail and follow-up has left us feeling disheartened and uncertain about entrusting such an important event to your venue. Furthermore, our disappointment was compounded by a series of disappointing incidents during our stay. We encountered instances of subpar service, including waiting for 30 minutes in the Rundle Bar without any staff attention, calling room service to pick up a tray from our hotel room with no response—resulting in it remaining untouched until our departure the following day—and renting out a campfire area with the expectation of service, only to find ourselves having to procure our own drinks as no assistance was provided. These experiences significantly detracted from our enjoyment and left us questioning the standard of service at the Fairmont Banff Springs. Despite our anticipation and willingness to engage with the planning process, we did not even receive a follow-up email regarding our wedding plans. This lack of communication further exacerbated our concerns about the level of service and attention to detail at the Fairmont Banff Springs. We sincerely hope that you will address these concerns promptly and take steps to ensure that future guests, especially those planning significant events like weddings, receive the exceptional service and attention they deserve.
It was a very special milestone celebration and everyone made us feel very special in recognizing it in every aspect during our stay!
Excellent service from the moment we pulled in to the moment we left. We appreciate the effort that was made to make our family trip a memorable one. Will certainly be back.
